2012 CAL WRITER GRANTS RECIPIENTS
Annually, CAL awards reimbursement grants that help defray costs for members attending workshops, conferences, seminars, retreats or similar learning opportunities. In total, CAL has $1,000 annually to award. Once those receiving the grants have attended their respective program, CAL asks that they either submit an article about the program to either the newsletter or the Website or make a formal presentation to the membership. This year we have three grants. Our first one goes to ANNETTE SHOPE. As you know, Annette and her husband moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. However, she remains quite active and designed the invitations and programs for the banquet. Annette is planning to attend The Writer’s Workshop in Asheville, North Carolina in June. Sponsored by Hay House, the largest publisher of self-help, inspirational and transformational books. All attendees are urged to submit a book proposal by the end of the year and qualify for a $10,000 advance. Our second Writers Grant goes to CAROLYN MILLER. Carolyn plans to attend a literary retreat May 18–19 in Paonia hosted by Lisa Jones, author ofBroken: A Love Story. In her application, Carolyn wrote: “What attracted me to this retreat was the space built into it for deep thinking, time for walks in nature, the lack of a strict schedule, classes on craft and that fact that most of the speakers are creative non-fiction writers.” Our third Writers Grant goes to JOY OVERBECK. Joy plan to attend the 2013 Pikes Peaks Writers Conference, named one of the 10 Best in the nation by Writers Digest. It will held next April. Joy wrote in her application: “The confab gathers a wealth of published novelists, agents and editors for over 70 workshops on topics such as writing craft, genre, query, traditional publishing and e-book information, as well as pitch and critique appointments. *Joy Overbeck's photo by Kelly Lemon Photography |
